TURF TALK | Episode 1: Battling Injury & Fighting Adversity | Roderick Boyd
Description
In this debut episode of Turf Talk, host Roderick “Deuce” Boyd takes you behind the scenes of his junior season as a college cornerback—highlight plays, his first interception, and then the moment a forceful hit on a kick return shattered more than just his adrenaline. Roderick walks us through the sharp pain and grinding click that signaled a torn labrum, the daily grind of therapy and trainers’ appointments, and the emotional tug-of-war between playing through pain and protecting his future health. Along the way, he reveals how leaning on teammates, family, and trainers kept him in the game mentally, and why discovering passions outside football—videography, gaming, and photography—proved vital to his identity and happiness. Whether you’re an athlete facing injury or anyone striving to turn adversity into action, you’ll find practical tips and inspiring insights here.

About the Project: For our second Student Podcast Collaborative series, Communication & Media majors will produce an all-new, three-episode, 90-minute podcast capstone. These students move from theory to practice—pitching ideas, writing scripts, recording and editing episodes, and finally publishing their original shows. Each series tackles both personal and societal topics, allowing hosts to flex their storytelling, research, and production muscles. By working in a long-form audio format—one of the fastest-growing areas in media—students gain first-hand experience with the creative possibilities and practical challenges of communication technology.
